Lesson Learned: Why you shouldn't step on people

I knew where I wanted to eat, after being given subtle hints about this particular restaurant in Madrid from my family. So a group of us went, and to my surprise there were numerous filipino waiters serving. I approached the host, a Spaniard lady, and told her that there were 4 of us for the night. She told me that the wait was at least 30 minutes because it was a Friday night, and I politely smiled back, telling her it was fine. Her judging eyes didn't go unnoticed however. "Estas Madrilena?", which roughly translated was, "Are you Spaniard/from Madrid?", I shook my head, "No pero estoy estudianto aqui. (No, but I'm studying here.) There was no reply. While she went to chek for a table for 20 other Spaniards, a filipino waiter approahed me, "Ma'am, filipina po kayo?" I smiled at the familiarity of the language, and replied, "Opo." Without another word she was able to get us a table within 15 minutes. She became our waiter and she was incredibly nice, and we got to talking for a while...

Spain:Plaza de Toros

I think that was about al my stomach could take. The idea of the bullfight is the ideology of wild and reason in one ring, battling each other. The light and brilliance of the matadore's outfit signifies Apollo's light, symbolizing intelligence, and the darkness of the bulls (usually) signifies the ideologies of Dyonesius--all physical, wild, brute...earthly thinga. Back in the day the bullfights were done at around 5 o clock because the sun would be high enough that the arena was half lit and half hidden in the shadow. I liked the symbolism and stuff, but seriously... it was brutal, and I was really sad for that one bull who was groaning and trying to avoid the matadores.

My favorite part of the whole thing was the costumes. El Traje de Luces or the Outfit of Lights ... because they sparkle like freaken stars in the dark. But I learned that toros don't recognize color, and only attack movement within their peripheral view... so the matadors are safe as long as they don't make sudde...

The Highlights of Portugal and Galicia, Spain

So I realized all I've really done to update is complain about the conversations I've had with very few people. The truth is every one ELSE has been so awesome and fun, and I really think I've made some legitimate friends out here. I guess studying abroad and meeting people is like creating friendships on crack--you skip all the bullshit and get down to the kitty gritty, which can be good or bad. Either way, I'm having an awesome time, so let me just share a bit of my adventures with you.

Lisbon and Belen, Portugal: Granted our "hotel" wasn't the best in town, I enjoyed running around like a tourist and figuring things out as we went. Pretty much we had 3 travel guide books, and it served as our survival kit for the city. We tracked down a couple restaurants, and found all the touristy things following their tiny maps and commentaries. We visited San Jeronimo Cathedral, which is one of my favorites of the ones we've seen (it looked as though it was carved from one limestone piece.), hit...

Spain: Galicia, the baby Ireland.

A few fun facts about Spain: Spain has been inhabited by many cultures, including the Irish Celts, who settled on the northern parts of Spain, concentrated in this area called Galicia. Last night, we learned cultural dances of the Irish, and ate very authentic Galician cuisine! The view is amazing from the country, and our hotel is located on the beach. Most of these pictures are from the Tower of Hercules, the OLDEST functioning lightouse in THE WORLD, and San Anton Castle.

Spain: Opera and El Escorial

On Thursday night, our school treated us to a Zarzuela Spanish Opera. Needless to say, I had trouble understanding a lot of what was going on...I had fun despite this! After that, we ate at this amazing sleek restaurant called "La Finca de Susanna", one of the yummiest restaurants in Madrid! Then, on Friday, we visited the Monastery called El Escorial. El Escorial is the place in which older royalty have been burried except for the Catholic Kings. It was a bit creepy, but amazing at the same time. After El Escorial, we visited La Villa de Caidos--the Valley of the Fallen. This is where all who fought in the Spanish Civil War are burried. Enjoy

To study abroad? That's more of a by-product. To enrich my experience as a human? But what price does that hold financially/time-wise? I wish I learned how to enjoy myself without any retentions, or things to hold me back.

Am I doing the right thing? Or am I merely running away? And if I am running away, maybe it's to recuperate. Is that so bad? My year had been filled with trials.
The One where She Goes To Nappa for her Birthday

21st birthday celebration at Nappa with my sister spent at Del Dotto, Darioush, V. Sattui, and coasting the Wine Train.

Lessons learned:

1. Spit the wine out if you don't like it to avoid getting drunk. Most wine tasting sessions offer more than 5 glasses. That's a LOT of alcohol! At least for me.

2. Hire a limo/driver. It's so hard to figure out what you're "limit" is if you have to drive.

3. Prepare to spend a lot of money on ordering some of the most delicious wines offered at the sessions.

4. ENJOY!

Hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed

We ate and drank wine most of the night, until Andrew had to drive us home because Tam and I were tipsy. :-)

On my actual birthday, I had a biochemistry quiz, so I took that, and then afterwards, I hung out at Bear's Lair with my 21 year old friends and drank high qualiy dark beer most of the afternoon. I didn't do much when I got home, mostly slept kasi alcohol makes me really sleepy pala.

My party on Friday was a TON of fun, not too big, but just right size. Lots of good music, good conversations, and drinks! Not to mention, my roommate Nicole baked me this AMAZING chocolate-dense-rich-goodness-OMG-mouthwatering/roses cake! :-)
All in all it was a good birthday week. An then next weekend? NAPA VALLEY for wine tasting! Stay tuned! I hope...

If I don't schedule the appointments or tasks on my phone--it won't get done. Definitely worth the
